Project highlights

We're excited to offer a blend of projects that have a unique focus on supporting the UK's sustainable timber industry. These planting schemes are made economically viable now through your support and will bring future income to land managers and local communities through job creation and management of these commercial plantations.

Projects in this basket will be changed periodically as the schemes reach maximum potential. If you set up a subscription, you will support a rolling portfolio of projects that fit the criteria of this basket.

Current basket composition:

  • Thornton Moor, Northumberland: Converting former arable and grazing land into a sustainable mixed woodland.
  • Doddington North, Northumberland: The largest new forest in England in 25 years, covering over 354 hectares.
  • Rarichie, Highland: A 183-ha commercial woodland consisting of mainly Sitka Spruce and Scots Pine.
  • Lowther 2, Cumbria: just over 60ha of commercial (mainly conifer) woodland, managed under continuous cover.

No carbon is transacted through sponsorship.

Mechanism and certification

All of the woodlands in this basket are Woodland Carbon Code certified, a quality assurance standard that’s backed by the UK government.

More about the projects in this basket

Thornton Moor is managed through continuous cover forestry without clear-felling. It will include a large native broadleaf buffer for nearby ancient woodlands and watercourses, while also preserving a Roman route identified on-site.

Established in 2017-18, Doddington North is a diverse woodland featuring Sitka spruce, native broadleaves, and Scots pine. The site also includes priority habitats, such as a rare peat mire that has been successfully restored. Biodiversity has flourished, attracting species like kestrels, barn owls, and nightjars, while the site also supports sustainable timber production and benefits local enterprises.

Rarichie woodland will be managed on a clear-fell basis and will provide sustainable timber in the future, supporting the local economy, and providing water benefits such as rainwater interception.

Lowther 2 is located within the Lake District National Park near Penrith, Cumbria. This project provides a source of sustainable timber for hardwood and softwood. There are further benefits from Lowther 2, such as wildlife support and natural flood mitigation.

FAQs

Who is behind the Carbon Club? How do I know if I can trust it?

The Carbon Club is powered by Forest Carbon, one of the UK’s most established and experienced woodland and peatland project developers. We’ve been around since before there was even a standard in place to regulate the sale of carbon credits in the UK (so we helped to develop one). You can learn more about our experience and story here.

How do you determine which tree species are best suited to an ecosystem and its environmental conditions?

Our project development team works closely with local forest managers and land agents across the UK and Ireland. This allows us to use local knowledge to design projects that are best fit for a specific location, delivering the most impact within the existing ecosystem, in line with potential future climate scenarios and without perverse incentives.

In addition, all projects closely follow UK government forestry guidance.
